The Pilates Method is widely know for the mat exercises; many individual are unaware that equipment, designed by Joseph Pilates is utilized as well (Cadillac, Reformer, Wundar Chair, Spine Corrector, Ladder Barrel). A spring-resistant apparatus called the "Reformer" is the centerpiece of the Pilates Method. The Reformer helps the student to focus on the quality of each exercise with proper body alignment creating better body symmetry. With attention to correct breathing and proper execution of the exercises you will develop the "Powerhouse:" (the coordination of the abdomen, mid and lower back and hips) into a firm central support from which the rest of your body is free to move gracefully and effectively.
About Joseph Pilates
Born in Germany in 1880, Joseph Hubertus Pilates had a lifelong interest in body conditioning. Constricted by chronic illness as a child, Pilates sought to overcome his disabilities with an amalgam of yoga, breath work, weight training and gymnastics. He was dedicated to becoming a stronger more flexible individual; he later grew to become an accomplished skier, diver, gymnast, and boxer. He believed that most of us overdevelop the stronger muscle groups, which ultimately leads to poor posture and spinal misalignment. His goal was to build and maintain a balanced, structurally sound body.
While interned in England during World War I, Joseph Pilates became a nurse. During this time, he designed an exercise piece of equipment by attaching springs to hospital beds for use with immobilized patients, Pilates called this piece of equipment an apparatus. His system of rehabilitation later formed the foundation for his style of body conditioning and specialized exercise equipment. In the early 1920s Joseph Pilates with his wife Clara moved to New York City where he opened the first Pilates Studio, initially his cliental was mainly from the dance population but over time his method gained popularity and now is being received from individuals of many different back rounds.
